Mets March Madness Final Edition

As part of the best April Fools joke ever, March continues in April! This is the final roster and a little bit of review on my part. But as a quick aside, I will no longer be following the NCAA tournament for three reasons (1) It’s no longer March so March Madness no longer exists, (2) Baseball has officially started, (3) I have filled my quotient of horrific basketball injuries for the season.

The following list is the final roster with players I had pegged for the roster in (parenthesis). Follow after for analysis on who’s bubble popped.

Mets March Madness 3-27

We’ll have one more March Madness Post in March and then the next day the season will start. Sunday the roster will be completely ready for Opening Day, so that will be the end of this feature. I’ll have to dream up a new feature.

A big round of cuts, plus the new Article XX(B) players being told where they’ll land, have made the 25 man roster much clearer.

On the Bubble: (Last 4 Out) OF   C Landon Powell*, RHP Jeurys Familia, LHP Scott Rice, RHP Cory Mazzoni

Procedural Bumps: Removed Next 4 Out and Way 4 Out section.

Cut:  INF Wilmer Flores, LHP Aaron Laffey*, INF Brian Bixler*, INF Brandon HicksRHP Carlos Torres*, OF Jamie Hoffmann*,  Pedro Feliciano*, OF Andrew Brown*,C Travis d’Arnaud.  and 1B Josh Satin*.

I’ve got Murphy on the DL now (and maybe only for a couple of days) instead of Wright, who I think will play opening day. Marcum’s spot simply won’t get filled on opening day. They’ll fill it when they need a fifth starter. I’ve got them carrying an extra position player, Neiuwenhuis, instead of an additional pitcher. So quite a bit of movement with a fist full of cuts. I don’t think anyone on the bubble will make the team, but Familia has the best shot if they decide to carry another pitcher.

Mets Outfield Power Rankings 3-27

So I go on vacation and forget which password I assigned to log into this blog. So sorry for not posting when I said I’d post.

This will be the last outfield power ranking for the spring as things have pretty much settled themselves out. I will continue to do a weekly power ranking on Mondays after the season starts because I feel the situation is not going to stay the same for the rest of the year.
Every weekday I’ll post an updated power ranking for the Mets outfield. The theory is that the top three would be starters (or share a platoon) and the next two would likely make the roster. An additional five candidates round out the list. (And yes there were 10 players who might have had a shot of playing in the outfield)

1. Collin Cowgill (1) – He’ll be interesting to watch this year. Sometimes all a guy needs is a chance to play every day. Cowgill will get it.

2.Marlon Byrd (2)- I think Terry Collins likes the veteran presence and track record here. He may not get so long a rope though.

3. Lucas Duda (4) – Duda has gotten hot at the right time. He’s looked like a legitimate everyday outfielder over the past week. Nice to see the one guy we expected to be good finally be good.

4. Jordany Valdespin (3)- His versatility has meant the Mets will want to keep him on the bench, ready for a spot start somewhere on the infield or in the outfield.

5. Mike Baxter (5)- Baxter is on a very short leash. Like, if he doesn’t hit over the first few weeks, he might be simply cut.

6. Kirk Nieuwenhuis (8) – Finally healthy enough to swing a bat. He looks okay, and will get extended looks as the spring season closes, with the hope he’ll get back into shape. With all the injuries he may break camp with big team, but going to AAA or extended spring training might help him get his swing back.

7. Matt Den Dekker (6) – Busting his wrist writes off the slim hope he’ll make the club to start the season. However, this is a name I’d keep an eye out for during the in season power rankings. He could sneak his way into a job if he’d just strike out less and hit better.

8.Justin Turner (10)  – He’s the starting second baseman until Murphy comes back. I don’t think he’ll see outfield time otherwise.

9.   Zach Lutz, (-) – Lutz will be on the roster as a first/third baseman. He’ll play outfield in a pinch, or an extra innings game where there’s no other option

10.  Nobody (-) – Woot, woot, outfield depth.

Out:  . Cut: Cesar PuelloJamie HoffmannAndrew Brown and Juan Lagares

No changes today. The bottom few true outfielders have been edging close to the middle of the pack, but no one’s proved they can be better than Baxter was last year.

Mets Outfield Power Ranking 3-19

Every weekday I’ll post an updated power ranking for the Mets outfield. The theory is that the top three would be starters (or share a platoon) and the next two would likely make the roster. An additional five candidates round out the list. (And yes there were 10 players who might have had a shot of playing in the outfield)

1. Collin Cowgill (1) – He’s pretty much locked in right now. He’ll get the chance to be the everyday starter, but he’ll have a very short leash.

2.Marlon Byrd (2)- I think Terry Collins likes the veteran presence and track record here.

3. Jordany Valdespin (3) – So, here’s the thing. Daniel Murphy isn’t back yet, I’m starting to think he may need some time on the DL. In that world Spin is the starting second baseman.

4. Lucas Duda (4)- Duda’s done enough to earn a job. It may not have been enough on another team, but here, it’s a performance worthy of starting.

5. Mike Baxter (5)- If only there was a better option. If den Dekker had no upside, I’d carry him over Baxter, because MDD will give me Gold Glove defense. Otherwise, neither can hit right now.

6. Matt Den Dekker (6) – He’s going to AAA to get his swing down. If he figures out AAA pitching, he’ll be on the next plane to New York (or wherever the Mets are playing at the time)

7. Jamie Hoffmann (7) – Soon he’ll be cut. He’s come around enough to get a spot at AAA at least as long as Nieuwenhuis is on the DL.

8. Kirk Nieuwenhuis (8) – Ugh. At this point he probably should be lower, but I just don’t have the heart to do that to him.

9.  Andrew Brown (9) – Brown will be assigned to AAA eventually. He’s earned a job somewhere with the Mets, even if it is fourth AAA outfielder.

10. Justin Turner (10) – I think he and Lutz are about done with their outfield experimentation.

Out:  Zach Lutz, Lutz will be on the roster as a first/third baseman. He’ll play outfield in a pinch, or an extra innings game where there’s no other option. Cut: Cesar Puello and Juan Lagares

No changes today. The bottom few true outfielders have been edging close to the middle of the pack, but no one’s proved they can be better than Baxter was last year.

Mets Outfield Power Rankings 3-15

Every weekday I’ll post an updated power ranking for the Mets outfield. The theory is that the top three would be starters (or share a platoon) and the next two would likely make the roster. An additional five candidates round out the list. (And yes there were 10 players who might have had a shot of playing in the outfield)

1. Collin Cowgill (1) – Played the whole game in center today, and had a hit and a run. I’d say they believe in him by now.

2.Marlon Byrd (2)- Byrd didn’t play today.

3. Jordany Valdespin (3) – Spin had a hit in a full day’s worth of at bats at second base. The fact that Daniel Murphy isn’t back yet, and Spin is basically the only second baseman left is the reason I didn’t move him up. If it weren’t for the fact he’s still doing okay, I may have moved him down.

4. Lucas Duda (4)- Duda hit a bomb today. That was good enough for management, and they pulled him after 3 plate appearances (he also had a walk).

5. Mike Baxter (5)- They are trying so hard to get him out of his slump, but he’s not responding. Past the home-town hero veneer is he really a just a AAAA player? Or maybe he’s not as focused with the loss of his mentor and former high school coach.

6. Matt Den Dekker (6) – den Dekker got the day off today with Cowgill going the distance.

7. Jamie Hoffmann (8) – They just keep giving him at bats, and, to tell the truth, he’s responded better than Baxter.

8. Kirk Nieuwenhuis (7) – This is mostly a procedural bump. Some of the lesser candidates are starting to hit a little better and Kirk is still far away from minor league games it seems.

9.  Andrew Brown (-) – Brown has found a little more success with the bat recently. It may be a little, far too late, but at least he’s not going quietly.

10. Justin Turner (9) – Turner was off. Watch the lineup tomorrow to see if he or Lutz gets the start at third. That could tell you who will get first crack at David Wright‘s potentially open spot.

Out:  Zach Lutz, Lutz played first today and added two more hits. I’m ready to see what this kid has, and the best way for that to happen is to take Wright’s spot if he goes to the DL. So I think his value as an outfielder has greatly dropped. Cut: Cesar Puello and Juan Lagares

Sorry Mets fans, no Brennan Boesch. He was signed by the Yankees. It was as I expected; he was snapped up by someone hungrier than we were, and someone who wouldn’t make him their highest paid outfielder by giving him $1.5 million (not including Jason Bay). Let that sink in. Our projected starting outfield, currently, wouldn’t make that much. That’s either really a cheapskate move, or really savvy shopping.

Injuries: Why Murphy keeps his Spot, But Neiuwenhuis Doesn’t

So far there’s been two major injuries where players aren’t expected to be put on the DL. Daniel Murphy, incumbent second baseman and Kirk Nieuwenhuis, early outfield favorite, are both still a ways away from Spring Training action again after getting hurt earlier in the Spring.

Both should make it back to live action before Opening Day, but both are not in the same place. Murphy looks like he’ll get back sooner, and has the second base job waiting for him when he does get back. Kirk on the other hand, seems to have been long since passed by in terms of starting outfielders. Why?

It’s a question of volume. Murphy has exactly one player who could chase him from his job right now, that’s Jordany Valdespin. With the Mets sending down Wilmer Flores today, the dust settles on only one player who has upside comparable or potentially greater than Murphy. The fact that Murph has more major league experience keeps the hound that is Valdespin away. That and the fact that Valdespin is one of the guys hounding Nieuwenhuis for his job.

But it’s not just Valdespin. Nieuwenhuis is under fire from a battalion of outfield hopefuls. Originally one of the top three options for the outfield with Lucas Duda and Mike Baxter, none of those three are sure things for starting spots and perhaps even roster spots. That’s because there are at least three others who are performing well so far. Collin Cowgill and Marlon Byrd have impressed as much as Valdespin. Since there’s just so much competition and the level of play is close to what could be expected from Nieuwenhuis, his absence is hurting him. It’s similar, but not quite the same, as what happened to the 49’ers’ Alex Smith. Smith was solid, but the fact that the team had depth at quarterback led to a switch while Smith was unable to play.

Let’s just say for argument’s sake that they was actually more candidates for the outfield. For instance, Duda was hitting .400 with five spring home runs this year. With three guys who look like they could handle everyday jobs in the outfield, Valdespin might be pushing Murphy instead of Neiuwenhuis. Valdespin’s natural position is in the middle infield, and if Murph isn’t able to go at any point, I think Valdespin gets first crack there.

At least neither Murphy or Neiuwenhuis are in the situation Frank Francisco is in. The Mets really don’t mind him being on the DL. “Take your time recuperating,” they say to the guy who pitched to a 5.00+ ERA last year. They want Murphy and Nieuwenhuis to get healthy, just like they want Johan Santana to get back to playing shape. They want those three players to be successful and as opposed to Francisco, they have faith they’ll all be quality when they are healthy. In the case of Nieuwenhuis, there’s just more people who they also feel will be quality who currently are healthy.

(Editors Note: there’s a small part of me that doesn’t want Neiuwenhuis to make the roster, only becuase I don’t want to fret over spelling his name 10 times in an article.)

Mets Outfield Power Rankings 3-14

Every weekday I’ll post an updated power ranking for the Mets outfield. The theory is that the top three would be starters (or share a platoon) and the next two would likely make the roster. An additional five candidates round out the list. (And yes there were 10 players who might have had a shot of playing in the outfield)

1. Collin Cowgill (1) – 0-for-2 replacing Matt den Dekker.

2.Marlon Byrd (2)- Byrd played DH again, which is a sign that the management trusts he can play the outfield. Since his bat has been solid, I’d still say he’s on the inside track.

3. Jordany Valdespin (3) – Solid day keeps Spin solidly in third.

4. Lucas Duda (4)- Day off, no movement.

5. Mike Baxter (5)- He’s really not making a strong case with the bat, but at least he scored a run.

6. Matt Den Dekker (6) – Broke up a double play with his arm band today, while also going 1-for-2

7. Kirk Nieuwenhuis (7) – He’s got a lot of ground to cover when he gets back, if he even gets back before Opening Day.

8. Jamie Hoffmann (8) – They keep giving him at bats. I don’t see anything that would make me excited.

9.  Justin Turner (10) – Still holding down this spot because he’ll be on the roster. The guys above are all angling for starting, platoon, or bench jobs. Turner is just looking for a couple more days that he doesn’t have to sit on the bench.

10. Zach Lutz (-) – He’s hitting a bit, and they decided to keep him in the game by moving him from third to the outfield during the game. Could it mean there’s working to try to get him on the roster? hmm?

Out: Andrew Brown , He had a hit today, but he’s basically Hoffmann. It’ll be interesting to see who drops off the roster first. Cut: Cesar Puello and Juan Lagares

Oh My Gosh, It’s Boesch!

Time to get excited Mets fans! There’s a player who has some upside and some major league success potentially available! Rejoice, Your Savior Brennan Boesch could be right around the corner.

All kidding aside, Boesch was a trade target in my mind for the Mets back before arbitration. I figured he could be had for a small fee, potentially either for a low level prospect or even (Gasp!) cash considerations (possibly send the cash we got from Detroit for sending them our Rule 5 draft choice).

Mets Outfield Power Rankings 3-13

Every weekday I’ll post an updated power ranking for the Mets outfield. The theory is that the top three would be starters (or share a platoon) and the next two would likely make the roster. An additional five candidates round out the list. (And yes there were 10 players who might have had a shot of playing in the outfield)

1. Collin Cowgill (1) -Cowgill hit his second dinger of the spring. He struck out twice, but is still hitting .379 in a more and more meaningful sample size.

2.Marlon Byrd (3)- Byrd also had a good day at the plate. He’s showing he’s at least a platoon player in the majors.

3. Jordany Valdespin (2) – With the day off, and how I think the franchise values him, he drops a spot today.

4. Lucas Duda (4)- 0-for-3 with a walk, not terribly inspiring, but neither are any of the remaining candidates.

5. Mike Baxter (5)- Did not play, but no one else made enough noise to move him.

6. Matt Den Dekker (6) – One at bat today. Nothing to move him up or down about.

7. Kirk Nieuwenhuis (7) – He’s getting passed by.

8. Jamie Hoffmann (8) – He made the first cut, which was more than I thought would happen. He’s just added depth for split squad games at this point.

9. Andrew Brown (-) – I had actually written him off. Saw him in the box score, and he had one at bat. Management seem to be more committed to giving Hoffmann a shot than Brown. But both will be fighting for AAA playing time, let alone MLB time.

10. Justin Turner (10) – Just holding down this spot because he’ll be on the roster. The guys above are all angling for starting, platoon, or bench jobs. Turner is just looking for a couple more days that he doesn’t have to sit on the bench.

Out: Zach Lutz, didn’t see action today, in the outfield or otherwise. Cut: Cesar Puello and Juan Lagares

And what about Brennan Boesch? He was cut today. He had a disappointing season last year, but has had major league success. I don’t think the Mets want him as bad as some other teams, so likely he won’t be joining this power ranking any time soon.
